A single empty box can transform into a 3D hero or animal! Package Craft is a type of paper craft that utilizes the design of an empty box to create imaginative artworks. There are four rules for making a piece:
1.    Only one empty box may be used per work.
2.    Use the materials as completely as possible to minimize waste.
3.    Do not cut through any text on the box (cutting individual letters is allowed).
4.    After completion, all text on the box must remain readable.

The art exhibition Package Craft: From Candy Box to Sculpture opens on November 22, offering a playful exploration of the creative potential of a single box. In conjunction with the show, a workshop will be held using empty boxes from popular American snacks, Sour Patch and Swedish Fish*.

It may seem simple, but it is surprisingly challenging. Bring your family or friends and give it a try!

about artist

Kazuma Takahashi
He began creating origami and crafts from empty boxes during his childhood, and while at university, he commenced transforming package designs into artistic works. Intrigued by the creative potential of this medium, he designated the practice as “Package Craft” and initiated exhibitions and workshops throughout Japan. In 2005, he launched a crafting campaign in collaboration with food companies such as Meiji and House Foods. In 2011, he established the Japan Package Craft Association, which received the Good Design Award in 2015 for its contributions to raising public and individual awareness. Since 2016, he has participated in the Mottainai Festival in Vietnam, organizing exhibitions and workshops. His gallery, “Kara no Omochabako,” originally opened in 2009 in Myoko City, was relocated to Joetsu City in 2024.
