LECTURER
Sōsetsu KAWAKAMI
11th-generation head of the Edosenke School of Tea. He grew up practicing the tea tradition of Edosenke, the school founded by his family. After graduating from university, he trained at Mushakōjisenke Kankyu-an, a different school of tea. Upon completing his training, he returned to Edosenke and devoted himself to the tea tradition of his family. In 2024, he succeeded to the name Kawakami Sōsetsu as the 11th-generation head of Edosenke.
In addition to hosting tea gatherings and tea ceremonies and teaching tea practice, he also gives lectures at universities and other educational institutions. He defines the Way of Tea as “creating, enjoying, and sharing good moments and spaces through tea.” Rather than focusing solely on the formal etiquette of tea, he explores ways to communicate and share the joy and profound depth of the tea tradition.
His tea name is Shinryūsai.
