Neo Japonism : Shunga is eighth in the series, FAUX SHO’, a bimonthly group show that focuses on different art movement/genre, where every show is interpreted by a diverse group of artists, each negotiating the fine balance of replication and free interpretation of a masterpiece. In this iteration, each artist was asked to pick an ukiyoe master who also created “shunga,” a sexually explicit and ornate painting or print which blossomed in the 17th century by aristocrats who custom ordered these erotic artwork with their wedding furniture. As popularity and development of mass producing technology made the prints widely available among the general urban public, an edict in 1722  banned the production altogether. An underground movement then thrived with almost every famed ukiyo-e artist producing the most exquisite and experimental works of art. The original “Japonism” was an electrifying influence to the young European painters who were exposed to the unusual methods and aesthetics of Japanese paintings and prints. In today’s version, the curiosity of its transcendent influence can be observed in this group of works from Los Angeles artists and current generation of artists from Japan.  -  Kio Griffith, curator

Kio Griffith is a Los Angeles and Japan based visual and sound artist, independent curator, writer, and producer. His work includes drawing, painting, sound, video, performance, electronics, language, sculpture and installation. He has exhibited in UK, Japan, Germany, Croatia, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Turkey, Belgium and the U.S. He has performed, collaborated or curated various musicians and contemporary artists, dancers and designers in galleries, museums, clubs and unconventional spaces. His current projects include project director at TYPE (Tokyo Yokohama Projects Exchange), curator and development director at ARTRA, associate editor at Fabrik and Artillery magazines, art director at Angel City Jazz Festival and has designed over 300 album jackets.
