LIBRARY USER'S GUIDE
Loan Periods
• A maximum of 6 books, 6 periodicals, and 4 sets of audio-visual materials may be borrowed from the Library at any time for a period of up to 3 weeks.
• The loan period for mail circulation materials is 4 weeks from the date shipped from the Library to the date they are postmarked by the carrier.
• New materials and special materials may be subject to shorter loan periods.

Renewing Materials
• Materials may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks by contacting the Library, provided that they have not been reserved.

Returning Materials
• All materials on loan must be returned to the library in the same condition in which they were borrowed. Members are requested to place videos and tapes in their appropriate cases and return AV items with their accompanying booklets.

Lost/Damaged Materials
• If the materials are lost, stolen, or irreparably damaged, the borrower must forfeit the replacement value to the library.
• If an item is damaged, fees are charged based on the severity of damage.

Late Fee
• $0.25 per day per item for all material types.
• No charge for weekends and holidays.
• Maximum fee of $5.00 per overdue item.

Overdue Notices and Bills
• Materials are due on the date stamped on the 'date-due' card, or written on the 'date-due' card if item was renewed by phone or email. Materials should be returned, arriving at the Library no later than that date.
• The borrower is responsible for knowing the date when materials are due.
• Overdue notices are sent when materials are overdue.
• Overdue notices will be sent either by mail or email depending on contact information provided.
• Members who do not return items for more than two months after the due date will lose their borrowing privileges unless late fees are paid and materials are returned.
• Late fee notices are sent when the materials are returned late and fees have been incurred.

 
 
Conditions for loan
• Reproduction of audio-visual materials is strictly prohibited.
• Audio-visual materials may be used strictly for educational purposes only, and not for any profit-making purpose or for broadcasting.
• The materials may not be loaned or conveyed to a third party or left in trust as security in any transaction.
• The Japan Foundation is not responsible for any legal consequences arising from any member¡Çs use of audio-visual materials borrowed from the Nihongo Library.
 
Appropriate Library Policy
The Nihongo Library establishes policies and rules of conduct in order to provide a clean, comfortable, and safe place for selecting materials, reading, researching, and studying for users and volunteers, as well as to protect the Library¡Çs materials, equipment, facilities, and grounds.

• All users must sign the visitor¡Çs note at the library counter before using the library.¡¡
• Failure to comply with any one of the library regulations or misrepresentation may result in immediate suspension or withdrawal of Library membership.
• For the comfort and safety of patrons, volunteers, and staff, and the protection of Library property, the following actions are examples of conduct not allowed on Library property.
• Engaging in any activity in violation of Federal, State, local or other applicable law, or Library policy.
• Stealing, damaging, altering, or inappropriate use of Library property in Library facilities or on Library grounds, including computer hardware and software, printers, copiers, phones, and other equipment.
• Consuming food or beverages in public areas of the Library.
• Using audible devices without headphones or with headphones set at a volume that disturbs others, using cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices in a manner that disturbs others. Cell phone and pager audible ringers must be turned off.

Using Audio Visual Equipment
• Computers and audio-visual equipment may only be used to view library resources. You may bring the case (up to three at a time) to the counter for user registration.
• Users are requested to use the headphones provided.
• When other patrons are waiting, please refrain from occupying a booth for more than 30 minutes at a time.
• Do not use your own diskettes or connect your own devices for downloads.
