Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third largest school district in the United States of America (USA).
With over 108,000 students learning Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin,
Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, and American Sign Language in 351 schools. Together with
the Consulate General of Japan, in Chicago, we are looking to expand our Japanese Language Program.
1) Have a passion for teaching and promoting Japanese language and culture internationally.
2) Have earned a Master’s degree from an accredited university.
3) Meet the qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary schools in Japan, including a Japanese
4) Have at least 2 – 4 semesters (1-2 Years) of experience working with PK-12 students including
teaching, student teaching, tutoring, classroom observation, school visits and other field experience.
5) Have sufficient mastery of English as determined by the Nelson-Denny English proficiency test
administered by CPS.
6) Desire to learn about the American education system and improve English and teaching skills.
Recruited Visiting Teachers are sponsored for a J-1 Visa and a Visiting International Teacher License from
the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). The visiting teacher program is designed to be a 3 year
commitment focused on cultural exchange and enhanced teaching practice. As a CPS teacher, Visiting
International Teachers receive the best compensation package in the United States and work in one of
our 500 schools.
The program begins in August when Visiting International Teachers arrive in Chicago for placement and
professional development. School begins in September, and before the compensation package starts by
the beginning of October Visiting International Teachers are responsible for all their expenses incurred
in Japan and in the USA.
CPS administrators will host online question and answer sessions the last week of January, applications
will be reviewed in February, candidates will be interviewed in February/March, with selections being
made before April. The application window will be open from 1/15/19 to 2/20/19. Please submit your
