This program is a discussion on current cultural and social practice collectives in East Asian cities. East Asian regions have had historical and cultural backgrounds contrary to those of the European and North American nations. A multitude of autonomous cultural and social spaces and multilayered networks have birthed in recent years contemplating alternative societies that practice labor without exploitation. On another level, these venues have served as factions to nurture experiments to open up the dialogue of creations.

"Collective Asia" creates a shared archive to capture the relationship between art and social practice in the Asian regions by gathering, collecting, translating, editing, confronting issues, and real voices of the people.

For this talk, we will begin with an introductory presentation and survey followed by a participatory exchange of information with the audience.

Reading Footprints is a group show surveying contemporary Japanese women photography and video. The photography and video work portray each artist’s culture not as vanishing, but as part of a lively, assertive group of people confident about the importance of their cultures in the past, their importance to the present and their influence on the future. They sometimes use images identified within the changing cultural landscape, but these images are not used as emblems of a generic unified past. Instead the images carry specific messages or stories about how individual artists interpret their native community, family and intricate histories, how they experience the present, or what they project for tomorrow.
