Fiscal Year 2013-2014
Salary Assistance Grant for Japanese-Language Courses
Program Description
The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (hereafter “JFLA”) supports educational institutions or school districts (hereafter “applicant”) in the U.S. that are facing temporary financial difficulties in either (1) starting up/ launching a new Japanese program or (2) expanding or maintaining a current program. JFLA provides one-year grant support to supplement the instructor’s salary, not exceeding $30,000.

In the case of (1) starting up / launching a new program:
Applicant may request funding for up to two years at the time of application; however, JFLA can only decide on the first-year grant support (for 2013-2014 School Year), due to our single-year budget system. Continuation of the grant support is not automatic, and the applicant who successfully received the initial one-year grant support will need to submit another Application Form for the 2nd year grant support (for 2014-2015 School Year). JFLA will decide on the 2nd year of the grant after carefully reviewing “Application Form (Year 2)” as well as the “Interim Report (Year 1).”
It is recommended that the applicant submits commitment letter(s) from the stakeholders (Examples: Dean, Dept. Chair, District Superintendent, Head of the Board of Education, Principal, etc.) at the time of application, regarding the continuation of the Japanese program after the completion of JFLA’s grant support.

In the case of (2) expanding or maintaining a current program:
Applicant can request funding for one year(*). The grant is given on the premise that the Japanese-language program and the instructor’s position at the applying institution will become self-sustaining after the completion of the one-year grant support.
(*) Applicants may apply for this grant again (for 2014-2015 School Year) after receiving this grant for the 1st year; however, they will be subjected to a stricter screening process during the 2nd year because the applicant should be self-sufficient after the initial one-year grant support. JFLA will evaluate the applicant’s ability to maintain the program after the completion of JFLA’s grant support. In general, priority will be given to first time applicants who have never received this grant.
Conditions of Grant
- The grant support is given on the condition that the applicant will continue to offer the Japanese program after the completion of grant support from JFLA.
- The grant only covers the instructor’s salary and fringe benefits. Any other overhead costs (for example, costs related to housing, commuting, administrative labor, etc.) are NOT covered by this grant.
- The grant can be used for either a full-time or part-time instructor. The salary scale at the applying institution and the instructor’s CV should be attached to the application form.
- Applicants can request funding for one instructor. However, in the event that a school district applies for this grant for several schools in the district, they may request funding for several instructors (max one instructor per school).
- Applicants can request up to $30,000; however, the grant amount will be determined in accordance with the JF’s own assessment scale, and it can be less than amount requested.
- The grant is provided on a cost-sharing basis between the applicant and JFLA. The applicant is expected to have detailed plans on how they will supplement the JF grant with other funds, if they are selected for the award.
- The grant support is for one year. JFLA can only decide on one-year grant support (for 2013-2014 School Year), due to our single-year budget system. Each applicant must submit a detailed plan on how they will maintain the Japanese program after completing the grant support.
- The financial assistance from JFLA should start during the JF Fiscal Year 2013-2014 (April 1, 2013 – March 31, 2014).
