1.Basics of Computer: Get to Know About Your Computer
1.1 How a Computer Works
(1) 4 important basic parts in a computer.
i Hard Disk Drive (HDD in short)
HDD is memory where all software and information are stored.
ii Random Access Memory (RAM in short)
RAM is memory that a computer uses only when it runs application software (e.g., when you use Microsoft Word or see web sites on a computer.)
iii Central Processing Unit (CPU in short)
CPU is what does all the calculation and processing when software is running.
iv Mother Board
Mother board is a base on which all the other three --- HDD, RAM, and CPU are attached.

Mother board is a spaceship. HDD is living space and storage room built to the spaceship. RAM is a work station. CPU is a crew member who works at the work station. The smarter (faster) the crew (CPU) works, the faster tasks are done. If the workstation (RAM) is bigger, the crew (CPU) can do more work at the same time.

(2) Software in HDD
i
Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
BIOS is basic program that controls the input and output of information.
ii
Operation System (OS)
OS is basic software to handle hardware and to operate application software.

  • Windows 95/98/ME
  • Windows NT/2000 (Professional/Home Edition)
  • Windows XP (Professional/Home Edition)
  • Mac OS 8.x/9.x
  • Mac OS X
  • Linux
iii Application Software
Application software are programs for a computer to do specific kinds of tasks. You must use different application software depending on intended propose. For example:

  • Text editing (Note Pad, Word Pad)
  • Word processor (MS Word, Word Perfect, Nisus, etc.)
  • Spread sheet (Excel)
  • Database (File Maker, Access)
  • Web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator)
  • 2 D image editing (Painter, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Web authoring (HomePage Builder, GoLive, FrontPage, DreamWeaver)

OS is captain of the space ship. He gives commands to a section chief (application software).
