JLPT The Basics (Aug.25)

This JLPT explanatory workshop aims to provide learners of Japanese with an explanation of the purpose, structure and scoring of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. It will also provide learners with the opportunity to practice answering questions using sample test questions. This course is suitable for first-time applicants, and previous applicants who would like information on the new JLPT.

90 page textbook with 1 CD published by Bonjinsh, and copyrighted by The Japan Foundation, and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services.  The book includes sample tests and the JLPT guideline. 

Summer Camp for Teens: Discover Little Tokyo

Step away from the classroom for a more interactive approach to language learning!  Learning Katakana (ex. ア、イ、ウ) and simple expressions in Japanese through fun activities such as exploring Little Tokyo and a scavenger hunts.  For 14-18 years old with no prior experience in learning Japanese.

  • Dates: Mon., July 16 – Fri., July 20 (5 meetings)
  • Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm (3 hours)
  • Location: Little Tokyo
  • Total hours: 15 hours
  • Fee: $180.00 (Class material included)
  • Age: 14 -18 years old

Japanese for Fun: Making Sushi with Mom/Dad (Aug.11)

Learn Japanese vocabulary and basic expressions as well as Japanese food culture and table manners, while making sushi through the instruction of a professional chef of Sushi Chef Institute (www.sushischool.net).  This course is designed for children 8 years old and up and accompanying their parents or guardians*.  No prior Japanese learning experience necessary.

*Up to two children can participate with one adult.

  • Dates: Sat., August 11 (1 meeting)
  • Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm
  • Location: Miracle Mile
  • Total hours: 4 hours
  • Fee: $20 for a child, $40 for an accompanying adult (Class material included)

Rules and Policies

1. Cancellation and Refund

Cancellation and refund requests must be received by e-mail (jpcourse@jflalc.org) by the cancellation deadline in order to receive a full refund. No refunds will be issued after the deadline passes. The cancellation deadline is about one week before the first meeting, which means, in principle; you cannot cancel the course once the course starts.

Japanese for Fun: Making Sushi with Mom/ Dad (August 11) – Deadline: August 3

JLPT The Basics: N4/ N5 – Deadline: August 18

2. Changes by JFLA

The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (JFLA), may cancel courses when necessary. Applicants will be notified in advance and receive refunds. The course contents are subject to change.

3. Cancellations by JFLA

JFLA may change a scheduled class due to an unforeseen circumstance. In such a case, we will schedule a make-up class by discussing the optimal date with the class. We may cancel the course if the number of applicants does not reach the minimum number to start a class.

4. Course Availability

All courses are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for each course will close once it is filled to capacity. A drawing will be conducted in the office of the JFLA if full capacity is reached and multiple applications are received on the same day. 

5. Late Registration

After the first class has been held, you may not enroll in the course.

6. Make-up Classes

You are responsible for your absence. There are no make-up classes or refunds if you miss class. We will provide for you the materials for the class you missed, but do not offer private tutoring.

7. Waiting List

Once the class becomes full, applicants can be placed on a waiting list. If space becomes available, applicants will be enrolled in the class. If space does not become available after the cancellation deadline, JFLA will refund 100% of your payment.
