Japan has a long history of robotics as far back as seventeenth century when Karakuri ningyo (automata) was invented. Nowadays, Japan has become well known for the advancement of robotics and its cutting-edge technology has been utilized in daily lives. The therapeutic robot PARO was designed to comfort the elderly, people with disabilities, dementia patients, as well as autistic children. PARO has been used in Japan, Europe and the U.S. for several years. In this lecture, Dr. Takanori Shibata, the creator of PARO will speak about the development of PARO and its practical applications, and the cultural impact of robotics in Japan.
Dr. Takanori Shibata is Senior Research Scientist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
