Fiscal Year 2010-2011

Special Grant Program for Professional Development Opportunities

for Japanese Language Teachers

 

This program is designed to provide partial aid for seminars, workshops, and training courses that can provide participants with CEUs (Continuing Education Units), credits, clock hours, and/or certificate of professional development hours, etc., which are authorized to be used towards receiving/maintaining their teacher’s licenses/credentials.   The purpose of this grant is to support Japanese language teachers who need professional development opportunity to receive/maintain their Japanese teacher’s license/credentials.

Priority will be given to projects that will be held in conjunction with conferences hosted by state/regional/national level teachers’ organizations for foreign language education.

 Application Deadlines: 

  • 1st Deadline :  August 1, 2010
  •  2nd Deadline: October 15, 2010  (**Additional Deadline)

(** The additional deadline of 10/15/2010 is for the project to be held between 12/1/2010 and 3/13/2011.)

 
 

 

ELIGIBILITY

1.   Applications must be submitted through a non-profit institution/organization involved in Japanese-language education (e.g., teachers’ associations, colleges/universities, etc.).

2.   Projects must fulfill the following requirements to be eligible for funding:

  • Projects must provide credits, CEUs, clock hours, or certificate of professional development hours, etc., which are authorized to be used towards receiving/maintaining their teacher’s licenses/credentials.
    Applicants must submit supplementary documents as proof that these professional development hours/credits are authorized and can be used towards receiving/maintaining the applicant’s teaching license/credential.
  • Projects must complete by March 13, 2011.
  • Projects must be related to Japanese-language education and should contribute to the promotion of Japanese language education in the area.
  • Projects should be carried out by the applying institution/organization, and a part of the cost should be borne by institution/organization.
  • Projects must not be aimed at religious or political purposes.

3.   Applicants must have a bank account in the institution’s name capable of accepting grants from the Japan Foundation. The grant funds will be remitted to the bank account of the applying institution, and cannot be sent to any personal accounts. (New bank accounts must be opened before remittance.)

4.   Applicants must be capable of implementing their proposed projects.

5.   In principle, the Japan Foundation does not provide grants for:

  • Foreign governments, including their administrative organizations and their embassy/consulate general in Japan, but excluding academic, cultural, or research institutes such as universities, and museums.
  • International organizations that currently receive financial contributions for administration of operation fee from the Japanese government.

6.    Receipt of grants or benefits from the Japan Foundation must not violate any laws or ordinances, etc.

 

GRANT COVERAGE

The Japan Foundation’s contribution will not exceed US $ 3,000 per project.

 

 

ITEMS ELIGIBLE FOR SUPPORT

 

 

 
  • Expenses for inviting lecturer(s):
     
    (1)   Honorarium
     
    (2)   Transportation
             (economy class using the most cost effective route from the departing airport to the destination airport)
     
    (3)   Accommodation
             (hotel expenses for the days in which the program is taking place)
  • Expenses provided for participants who require professional development credits/hours to receive/maintain their teacher’s license/credential:
     
    (1) Credit application fee
     
    (2) Transportation
         (economy class using the most cost effective route from the departing airport to the destination airport)
     
    (3) Accommodation
          (hotel expenses for the days in which the program is taking place)
     
    (4) Registration fee **

    The JF will only cover the registration fee required by the conferences hosted by state/regional/national level teachers’ organizations for foreign language education, where the applicant plans to hold the proposed project.
  • Other Expenses:
     
    (1)  Rental fees for venue and equipment
     
    (2)  Printing cost for handouts
 

SELECTION POLICY

Applications will be reviewed from the following perspectives:

 

l Number of authorized professional development credits/hours, etc.

l Topics/themes of the professional development project

l Benefits to the participants of the project

l Specific outcomes and effects of the program

l Potential benefits to Japanese language education in a regional/national level

l Dissemination of project outcomes

l Evaluating methods of the project

l Ability to raise funds from sources other than the Japan Foundation, including own funds

l Feasibility of the project plan (outline, framework, schedule, financial preparation, etc.)

 

Note:   Priority will be given to projects that will be held in conjunction with conferences hosted by state/regional/national level teachers’ organizations for foreign language education.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES 

 

Application forms must ARRIVE at the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles by the deadline. The JFLA does not accept applications submitted by e-mail or fax.   Applications submitted in advance are welcome.

Before applying, please be sure to contact the JFLA office either by email (language@jflalc.org) or telephone (1-213-621-2267) to inform them of your intention to apply for the grant.  If you do not contact JFLA in advance, your application may be rejected.

POST APPLICATION PROCEDURES 

1. Notice of Grant Approval

 

     

8/1 Deadline:  The JFLA will inform applicants of the results in late August.

10/15 Deadline: The JFLA will inform applicants of the results in mid November.

 

 

 (The JFLA will send the “Notice of Grant Approval” along with the related documents such as “Acceptance/Non-Acceptance of Grant and Application for Payment” form, “Final Report” form, and a sample “Questionnaire” form, etc.)

 

2. Submission of Required Documents

 

 

        Applicants who are awarded grants should submit the following documents to the JFLA by the respective due dates:

 

l Acceptance/Non-Acceptance of Grant and Application for Payment” form must be returned within two weeks upon receiving the “Notice of Grant Approval”.

 

l Final Report” form must be returned within two weeks upon completion of the proposed project.

 

l Proof of payments (copies of receipts, invoice, etc.) for the items that the JFLA will support must be attached to the “Final Report”.

 

3. Grant Payment

 

 

     The JFLA will remit the grant after we review the “Final Report” and proof of payments.  The JFLA will send a payment check along with the notice “Confirmation of Payment.
